Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner were two of the most famous female murder suspects in the 1920s. Both women were accused of killing their lovers in separate cases in Chicago, Illinois.
Beulah Annan, aka "The Champagne Blonde," was the inspiration for the character Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago. In 1924, Annan killed her lover, Harry Kalstedt, in their apartment after a drunken argument. She then attempted to kill herself and was found by her husband when he returned home. Annan was arrested, and her sensational trial garnered widespread media attention. She was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to prison.
Belva Gaertner, aka "The Velveteen Lady," was accused of killing her lover, Walter Law, a wealthy businessman. In 1924, Law was found dead in Gaertner's car with gunshot wounds. Gaertner was arrested and put on trial, where she gained attention for her stylish clothing, coiffed hair, and sensuous demeanor. She was acquitted after a mistrial, and the case has never been solved.
Both women's cases became famous because they challenged traditional gender roles and expectations. They were also used by the press to sell newspapers and create sensational headlines.
